Introduction by Ron Clancy For many years Woodlands has been an integral part of New Westminster’s history, first as a provincial asylum then, more recently, as the focus of a major development. That history is complex, involving dramatic shifts in the way persons with disabilities are housed, charges of abuse, the implementation of de-institutionalization, proper respect for the dead, preservation of heritage buildings and, finally, discussions over the best use of the property. Michael de Courcy has risen to the challenge of this long and complicated history, treating the subject in a manner sensitive to the lives that Woodlands touched while not avoiding the controversies the site has generated. The Library is pleased to be able to support and host this exhibition and assist in making the history of Woodlands more known and available.
